Grading Policy Changes:
SCS has finalized their grading policy. See below:
Homework: Prior to this policy change, your child’s homework average accounted for 10% of the final grade. Students began each quarter with a 100 hmk average, and 3 points were deducted for each missing assignment. The 100 was reinstated each quarter to start fresh. (All homework is scored for completion only.)
Change: Instead of deducting 3 points for each missing assignment for a full quarter, I will break the quarter into two 4.5 week segments. Each missing math homework assignment will result in 6 points being deducted from the homework average. After the 4.5 week segment, your child will begin with a new 100 hmk average. Again, 6 points will be deducted from that average for each missing assignment. Each 4.5 weeks, I will enter the homework average 2x. Because this is just going into effect, all of my math students will begin the year with two 100/A homework grades. However, after the 4.5 week mark, I will begin deducting the 6 points per missing assignment. This will continue for the remainder of this school year.
Math Facts: Prior to this policy change, I counted math facts as 10% of your child’s average.
Change: I will enter math facts under “projects, portfolios”. It will now only count 5%. This will be a total of at least 8-9 grades each quarter.
Class participation:
Change: This is a new 5% portion of your child’s grade. Your child completes an application problem in a 3 subject notebook each day in class. I will use this math problem for participation. ALL that is required of your child is to enter the class, begin the problem, and put forth effort to solve it. It does NOT need to be correct or 100% completed. I am only looking for effort. Because there are 4 required participation grades, I will be checking your child’s notebook every day. After 2 weeks, I will enter a participation grade. Your child will earn 10 points for each completed problem. (10 days = 100 points). This will give me 4 participation grades. (NO points will be deducted for absences or CLUE days.) All students will be given a 100 for the first participation grade. (First 2 weeks of school) ***Remind your child of the importance of getting started on this problem immediately upon entering math class. Many students tend to use this time doing other things, essentially avoiding the problem. I will also speak with the class about this.
